Date: | Dec 19 2024, 12:06 PM | Subject: | Coyote Sightings | Hello Neighbors,
Since Dec 13th, I have spoken with an Animal Control officer with the City of Lawrence, Kansas Wildlife and Parks and KC District Wildlife and Parks regarding the numerous sightings of coyotes in our neighborhood. I learned that none of these organizations provide removal/relocating of wild animals.
I was told the best manner to resolve this issue is to have the wildlife harvested. None of the options suggested seemed viable to me because using traps or poison could accidentally harm or kill a neighborhood pet.
It was strongly suggested that we all exercise caution when walking in the early mornings as well as evening hours as this is the time when wildlife are most active. We should be prepared to make startling sounds (such as clapping hands, loud whistles or yelling) to scare the wildlife away. It was suggested to make ourselves appear as large as possible by waving our arms around in the air. Carrying a flashlight to improve our visibility or even a spray water bottle that can be used to frighten the wildlife are helpful ways to ensure one's safety.
Ironically, I spotted a coyote around 2 PM the day before yesterday crossing Congressional Drive into our neighbor's backyard. My personal suggestion would be to make arrangements to walk with another neighbor as the presence of many would be more of a deterrent to the wildlife.
Stay safe and Happy Holidays,
